Arena Tournament

FAQ

General
What is the World of Warcraft Arena Tournament?
The World of Warcraft Arena Tournament is a tournament based on the Arena System in World of Warcraft. All teams participating in the 5-vs-5 Arena matches will be competing for a spot to play at live events and win prizes. The tournament will consist of two qualifying rounds, followed by live regional tournaments, and will conclude at a global final event.

What are Arena Teams?
Arena Teams are groups of players who choose to fight together in Arena Ladder matches. You must be level 70 to create or join an Arena Team.
  • There are two types of Arena matches: rated battles and practice battles (skirmishes)
  • Rated battles count toward your team’s ranking in the current Arena Tournament, and you must be a member of an Arena Team to participate.
  • Practice battles will not affect your team’s ranking.
  • Your team will obtain a ranking by playing at least 10 rated battles a week

How do I make an Arena Team?
Arena teams are created in the same fashion that guilds in the game are created. Special Arena NPCs called Arena Promoters are in various main cities like Ironforge, Orgrimmar, and Gadgetzan. Talking to an Arena Promoter is like talking to a Guild Master NPC. You purchase an Arena charter based on the type of Arena matches you wish to play, with the cost depending on the size of team (80g for 2-vs.-2, 120g for 3-vs.-3, 200g for 5-vs.-5), and then have the appropriate number of players sign that charter. Once the charter is complete, return it to the Arena Promoter and your team will be created. Once created, you can compete with your fellow teammates in your respective battlegroup.

How many team members do I need for the tournament?
The tournament will use the 5-vs.-5 format only. So you need at least five members including yourself.

If I enter the 5-vs.-5 match type, can I have more than five people on my team roster?
Yes. If you have 5 members for the 5-vs.-5 format, you can have up to five extra players. The additional players will act as “bench” players in case one of your starting five can not make it to a match, or if you want to change the makeup of your team.

Can I be on more than one Arena Team at a time?
If you are in a team playing in the 5-vs.-5 matches, you can still join other teams and participate in the 2-vs.-2 and 3-vs.3 match types. However, you can only be on one team for each type. So you can only participate in one 5-vs.-5 team for the purposes of the tournament.

How do I check the current arena rankings?
Ladder rankings for each bracket (2v2, 3v3, and 5v5) and battlegroup are available in the Arena Ladder Section of the Armory The ladders will be updated daily, and will reflect each team's name, realm, faction, win-loss record, and rating. In addition, if you are a member of an arena team your current ladder rank for each team will be displayed on your character profile.

What happens at the end of the first qualifying round?
Players will have until April 15 to achieve top rankings in their battlegroups. The top teams from each battlegroup will be invited to participate in the second qualification round, where they will compete with the top teams from the other battlegroups in their region. Characters on the qualifying teams will be copied to a public test realm (PTR) and will have two weeks (April 21 to May 4) to compete for the top eight spots and advance to the regional tournament.

How many teams per battlegroup qualify to the next round?
The number of qualifying teams per battlegroup will be proportional to the relative sizes of each battlegroup. We will post the specific number of qualifying teams per battlegroup at a later date.

If my team qualifies for the next round, will I still be able to play on my live realm with the same character that ends up getting copied to the PTR for the tournament?
Yes. The character will be copied to the PTR for the next qualification stage, effectively creating a snapshot version at that point in time, but it will also remain available for further play on your live realm.

What happens after that?
The top eight teams that qualified from the second qualification round will then compete at a live regional event (time and date to be announced in the near future). The top teams (likely a different number of teams per region) will then advance to the global finals!

What are the prizes?
The prizes for the tournament will be announced at a later date.

Sounds good. How do I sign up?
To participate, you must have an active subscription to World of Warcraft with an account in good standing. You must also meet all eligibility requirements listed in the rules. Players meeting these requirements will be allowed to participate in the tournament by utilizing the in-game Arena System.

How do I learn more about the Arena System?

What happens to my Arena rank if I transfer my character to a different account or realm?
Since the Arena teams are made up of players who are on the same realm, transferring a character in an Arena team to a new realm will remove that character from its team. And, since your character's Arena rank is based on the performance of your team, transferring the character to a new realm will result in the loss of that character's Arena rank.

Will I lose my Arena rank if I transfer my character to another account that I play World of Warcraft with?
Yes, even though the character may remain on the same realm, being associated with a different account will reset its Arena rank. The character can still participate in Arena ladder matches; however, if the character doesn't reach the required Arena rank by the end of the ladder portion of the tournament, then that character will not be able to continue on into the qualifying rounds. The team may continue on without that character, but losing a character may hurt their odds of success against other teams.

If I am the team captain for my Arena team, what happens to my team should I choose to transfer my character to a different account or realm?
You will need to promote someone else on your team to captain before you transfer. Otherwise, your team will be leaderless and will require game master assistance to appoint a new captain.

Is there an Arena Tournament at the end of every Arena season?
No, Arena seasons do not necessarily conclude with an Arena tournament. If there is a tournament, it will be announced ahead of time to give players the chance to practice, form teams, and steel themselves for the new challenge.
